Coverage:

This is a course in basic written Chinese for those with some Mandarin speaking ability. It will focus on the simplified versions of characters used in mainland China, rather than on the more traditional characters used elsewhere, such as in Taiwan. Since learning Chinese characters depends heavily on practise that learners can undertake by themselves, students will be expected to study and do homework outside of classes, which will be used to monitor, direct and reinforce their learning. The class sessions can also serve to reinforce and expand on the learner’s understanding of the vocabulary and grammar involved with the characters being studied.

It is anticipated that the four sessions will cover a total of 750 of the most frequent Chinese characters, possibly introducing as many as 240 characters in the first level, another 210 in the second, and another 150 each in the third and fourth levels, as materials for reading practice become longer. After completing this study learners will be prepared to undertake the program in Intermediate written Chinese.
