Resources: Skype

The Centre uses the popular Skype program and facility to deliver its online classes. Skype actually has diverse uses: not only can two or more people use Skype to talk with and even see each other over the internet, but it is also possible to use it to contact people via their telephones or mobiles at lower cost than through a telephone company. To take online courses with our Centre, however, you only need to obtain a copy of Skype and be prepared to use it to receive voice and video on your computer.

Skype can be downloaded for free from the Skype website at <http://www.skype.com/>, and its use for some purposes, including what you will need for online study, is also free. Here is how to proceed:

  1. The resources you need to use Skype include a computer or similar device (e.g. a tablet) that is connected to the internet and equipped with a microphone and speaker or earphones. Since the quality of the sound is important we recommend using a computer with headphones (rather than built in sound facilities) and a relatively fast internet connection (e.g. ADSL rather than a modem). It is not necessary for you to transmit video of yourself, but if you would like to, then you also need some sort of video camera (many computers now come with one built in).
  2. Download the Skype program from the Skype website, such as at <http://www.skype.com/en/download-skype/skype-for-computer/> to get the program for your computer.
  3. Obtain a Skype account from the Skype website, at <https://login.skype.com/account/signup-form>.
  4. Whenever you want to attend class you simply run the Skype program that is now on your computer to connect with your lecturer. (You no longer need access to the Skype website to do this.) Here is a link to instructions on how to do this.

The above should give you enough information on using Skype for the purpose of study with the Eastern Road Language Centre. For further information for using Skype for various purposes, you can consult the Skype website, and another useful source of advice is a 'howstuffworks' website at <http://computer.howstuffworks.com/internet/tips/how-to-use-skype.htm>.
