Class size:

3 to 12 learners

Resources required:

Probably reading material can be supplied. Learners also need access to a suitable Chinese dictionary that they are able to use.

Coverage:

These intermediate and advanced level courses will focus on reading texts or selections written in the simplified versions of characters used in mainland China. The tentative plan is for the instructor to supply learners with copies Chinese readings selected to suit their interests and abilities. Students would then be expected to study each reading before class in preparation for working through the reading together in class to discuss any unfamiliar characters, expressions, grammar, and aspects of culture. The classes can be taught in Mandarin Chinese to the extent students are able to use the spoken language, but with English as required to explain such things as the meanings of words and points of grammar.

In intermediate level classes it is expected that learners will read with difficulty, and will need a lot of support on vocabulary and grammar. Thus they are distinguished from advanced level classes, where learners are expected to be able to read more easily, so that class time will be devoted to more difficult vocabulary and more advanced issues in relevant aspects of Chinese culture.
