List of programs in various stages of development

Note that all programs except (3 and 4) below are intended only for adult learners.

  1. Spoken Mandarin Chinese: This is a series of ten-week courses in spoken Mandarin Chinese at increasingly higher levels.

  2. Spoken and written Mandarin Chinese: This is the same as the Spoken Mandarin Chinese course (above), but with additional study of written Chinese.

  3. Learning Chinese through movies (for young people and adults): This is a series of courses in Darwin to help young people (age ten or above) and adults with a basic knowledge of Mandarin Chinese improve their abilities with the spoken and written language through the study of entertaining movies or television series.

  4. Chinese for Chinese background children: This is a program for younger (age 6 to 10) or older (age 11 to 15) children from Mandarin speaking backgrounds to help them maintain and extend their abilities in spoken and written Chinese.

  5. All about Chinese characters: This is being planned as a basic short course on the characters used in Chinese and Japanese for those with no knowledge of either language.

  6. Basic written Chinese: This is being developed as a program for those who already have some speaking ability in Mandarin Chinese and wish to develop a basic ability to read and write Chinese.

  7. Intermediate or advanced Chinese reading: This will be a program for those who already have some knowledge of written Chinese. Intermediate level classes will be suitable for those who have completed Basic Written Chinese (above), while the advanced level will be more demanding. Classes at each level can be taken repeatedly since each they will vary in the reading material and associated vocabulary and grammar that is covered.

  8. Mandarin for Business, Travelling or Dining: We are working on the development of programs for people who want to be able to use Chinese for such particular purposes as business or travel and dining in China. They will probably need to be taken after a ten week introduction to the spoken language (from 1 above).

  9. Pinyin Transcription: This is a short course for Mandarin speakers who wish to master the use of the pinyin system of transcription. (Use of the pinyin system is also taught in the beginners levels of the programs in spoken and in spoken and written Mandarin Chinese.)

  10. Special tutoring: We can also organise one-to-one tutoring and other special programs to suit your particular needs or interests.

  11. In-country study programs: The Centre is also prepared to act as an agent for in-country study in China; for further information, please contact the Centre by email at <contact@easternroad.com.au>.

Please note:

  • Most programs are available both online and locally in Darwin. Our online program uses freely available Skype software; click here for details.

  • Assessment is free. We will assess your speaking and/or writing ability and needs to recommend the most appropriate program.

  • Programs are scheduled according to demand. We run programs when enough students are interested.

  • We teach culture with language. Most of our classes are concerned with how to interact in Chinese to accomplish particular purposes, and this involves culture as well as language.
