Coverage:

We conceive this as a set of three courses, one each focusing on the basic spoken Mandarin Chinese needed for the special purposes of (1) doing business in China, (2) travelling in China, and (3) dining in restaurants and other places to eat in China. Each will assume that the learner already has basic knowledge of spoken Mandarin, including basic greetings, numbers, and Mandarin pronunciation and how it is represented in pinyin transcription, so that these will not need to be taught, although they will be reinforced throughout the program. The course will then systematically introduce and provide practice for the particular language and cultural understandings needed for the topic it is dealing with. While the focus will be on spoken Mandarin, occasional written forms may be covered to the extent they are valuable for dealing with these purposes. Students can expect some overlap in grammar and vocabulary among the three courses and with other study of Mandarin they may have undertaken, but to the extent this is found these courses will enable them to practise what they have already learned as they focus on new material.
