This is a course in reading and writing pinyin transcription for Mandarin speakers who are unfamiliar with the system. Pinyin is a way of writing Mandarin Chinese in the same letters as used by English, for use in Chinese dictionaries and as one means of inputting Chinese characters into electronic devices. Since its introduction in the 1950s it has become widely used in mainland China, but it may be unfamiliar to Chinese speakers from other areas.
