All about Chinese characters

Coverage:

This is a basic introduction to writing Chinese characters for anyone, whether simply as an art form or to support further studies in either Chinese or Japanese. It begins with a brief overview of the historical development of Chinese writing in mainland China and its development in such other locations as Japan, Korea, Taiwan and Vietnam. It then covers the basic strokes used to write characters and how more complex characters are composed of radicals and other basic elements. These is a brief consideration of the art of calligraphy, but no attempt to practice it. The program ends with a survey of several ways used to look characters up in dictionaries and ways of entering characters in such electronic devices as computers.
